Stopped in for a quick breakfast after running errands.

I immediately enjoyed the spot where I was seated in front and appreciating listening to oldies on the sound system.  The menu had an eclectic assortment of choices so I chose the Fried Green Tomato Benny.  it was a well seasoned fried green tomato with greens and hollandaise sauce over English muffins.  I requested the fruit side option.

The service was attentive yet not overbearing.  Sadly, no refills on the cold brew.  Living in Echo Park, I know I'll be in here often.

I've never been moved to review before, but I want to call attention to a health concern--

During my visit, the waitstaff explained to me that the kitchen was inconsistent at different times of day (per customer complaints). If you must, I say opt for the dinner service: I had an excellent panko-crusted Mac & Cheese for dinner last week, and was craving it again for lunch.

For lunch, it was served to me with coffee cake crumbles on top instead of panko. "This is how we always do it," my server lied, "We are going for a salty/sweet bite." I can't help but wonder what acclaimed chef Charles Michel would say about this bold and recreational culinary pairing, as he is seated next to me at the counter. By the way, the counter has a curious 20° slope to it.

The second Mac-attack had clearly been sabotaged by the kitchen, as it arrived to me in what I believe was the same pan soaked in dishwater. The cheese patently was not able to melt onto the noodles because they were so wet with dishwater. The server asked how this batch compared, and I had him send it back as well. "Yeah that other waiter said it didn't look so good," he acknowledged.

It's hard to say whether this batch was what ultimately gave me food poisoning, or if it was the vegan BLT I settled on.

I wish I'd read the recent review for the sour (spoiled?) tempeh, referred to misleadingly as 'vegan bacon.' It's a pungent, maple flavor that is so unwelcome on a BLT, never mind the mushy/doughy fry on the green tomatoes and the (candied?) toast it's served on. It has that smell of when garbage turns sweet.

I was sent home with a slice of chocolate chess pie on them, which was a delicious way to get some food back in my stomach after it was evacuated. Shame to hear that their famous desserts are no longer made in-house under the new management....and only two choices of pie?

Cute spot, quick service, but the food lacked some flavor/love.

Ordered the Corned beef hash and the potatoes were slightly undercooked. The skillet was drowning in water from the veggies(?) that made the dish seem more like a soup. Eggs were the only good thing about that experience.

I really wanted to give this place a chance. Makes me think I should've ordered something else. Also, Coffee wasn't the best which makes me sad.

    Probably won't return.

Brite Spot has had staying power and represents a piece of LA that's rapidly fading away. It recently remodeled and revamped its menu to add many labeled vegan items, but the food isn't great and neither is the service.

We got the vegan bacon burger ($15.25) but hated the sour (spoiled?) tempeh bacon. Don't get tempeh here. The burger itself, an Impossible patty, was fine but you can get better, identical food at Mohawk Bend or Sage a couple blocks away in either direction.

The vegan buckwheat waffle ($12.25) was a soft, crumbly, dry, mealy, terrible thing. Don't get this. I have no other feedback.

Despite the diner being empty at 3 p.m., it took a while for us to be acknowledged and seated. It also took a good 10 minutes before someone came to take our order and another 30 minutes before our food arrived. The utensils were dirty and so were the coffee mugs (but the server replaced them all for us).

Brite Spot is a disappointment. Don't come here.

Brite Spot gets 3 stars for the service, which has significantly improved since reopening (glad they brought back Ricky, he is an awesome server and so welcoming). Unfortunately, service only goes so far when people are coming here for good food and a solid slice of pie--which The Brite Spot was famously known for for years and now stopped making any of their desserts in house--REALLY!

The menu is almost identical to the one before it with the
exception of a broader vegan menu (Oh Impossible Meat, you are slowly taking over). I've tried a few things from it; here's what Brite Spot does right and what's
    meh:

    The good:

Eggs: fluffy, savory, good stuff. I had these and did't feel the need to reach over for the ketchup bottle (I'm a ketchup fiend).

Seasonal vegetables: the best thing I've tried from the menu; a good variety of carrots, broccoli, squash, and cauliflower. I recommend this to my veggie-loving friends.

    The meh:

Meatloaf: The meatloaf itself is subpar; it's not disgusting, but it doesn't stand out from other diner renditions or even chains such as Marie Callender's; it's more salty than savory and there's nothing unique about its flavor--meh. The mashed potatoes it's served with lack some creaminess (come on, it's mashed potatoes). I wouldn't recommend this dish to anyone who loves meatloaf because it's, well, disappointing.

Ice Cream Sundae: generic ice cream with chocolate syrup (I feel hot fudge always does sundaes more justice), and, the biggest let down--dry chocolate chip cookies! Dry chocolate chip cookies! If you love sweets--steer clear and order the...oh wait, Brite Spot no longer makes bourbon pecan, banana creme, chocolate banana creme, cherry, or chocolate peanut butter pies that allured peeps from all corners of the east side. Tsk, tsk. TSK, TSK, new ownership. Bad business move!

Will I be back? Highly unlikely. There are a significant amount of late-night dining options in Echo Park with tastier entrees and better dessert selections.
